The National Consumer Coalition's privacy group has named Attorney General John Ashcroft as a privacy villain of the week. This is incrementally interesting but not really that surprising -- Ashcroft has been called far worse recently.
What's interesting to note here is how being part of the world's largest law firm (that is, the Justice Department), combined with Sept. 11, can reshape your world view. I wrote in January 2001 that Ashcroft had pledged to review the FBI's Carnivore system with an eye to privacy, and how he used to talk about the Fourth Amendment. What a difference three-and-a-half years makes.
