Politech is the oldest Internet resource devoted to politics and technology. Launched in 1994 by Declan McCullagh, the mailing list has chronicled the growing intersection of law, culture, technology, and politics. Since 2000, so has the Politech web site.

SpamArrest asks another author of true but critical info for takedown

Thanks, everyone, for the voluminous replies. I'll collate them shortly
and send them out, along with a statement of list policy in this regard.

Declan,

Yes, Spam Arrest is attempting to edit reality, to pretend that they
never spied upon their customers and their customers' correspondents to
compile a spam list. Here is my reply to their request that I censor a
critical article.

If you forward this, please spam-sanitize my email address. Thanks.

---------SA correspondence follows---------

Cartmell,

In a word: No.

In explanation: The URL you've referenced is a mirror on a server to
which I have no access. The reason it was mirrored was to ensure the
availability of some of my old articles, even when my own server(s)
changed. Someone thinks that article is worth preserving, I suppose,
since it is still up.

I think it is worth preserving as well, which is why I keep an updated
version on my own site. I believe www.archive.org has it permanently
archived as well. So it's a little late to be retroactively editing
reality: Spam Arrest _did_ commit an egregious offense, lied about it,
then when caught out made a weaselly "apology" which victims had to
actively search for on the web (ie- the only way to know you'd almost
"apologized" was to know you'd almost "apologized;" quite circular and
convenient for SA).

And judging by the emails I still get from people who consider
themselves ongoing victims of your so-called service, there is still
something very wrong with Spam Arrest. The more warnings out on the Net,
the better.
