McCullagh, the mailing list has chronicled the growing
intersection of culture, technology, politics, and law. Since

My article on Phil Zimmermann and Network Associates from a year ago:

"I never would have allowed my own company to join
the Key Recovery Alliance," Zimmermann told me
yesterday. "As soon as I found out about McAfee
being a member, I tried to do something about it."

TOBACCO TAX (WRLD 7:46 am)
http://www.wired.com/news/news/email/member/story/16209.html
It took awhile, but Rob Reiner beat big tobacco. The movie
director declared victory Wednesday for the California voter
initiative he wrote, which would raise cigarette taxes to
pay for children's programs. There are still a few absentee
ballots to plow through, but eight days after the polls
closed the measure's lead had grown to 57,070 votes among
more than 7.6 million ballots counted, ensuring that the
state's per-pack pinch will rise from 37 to 87 cents.

CHINA'S ANGER (WRLD 7:46 am)
http://www.wired.com/news/news/email/member/story/16211.html
Beijing's propaganda machine, reacting to the Dalai Lama's
White House visit this week, is portraying the exiled
Tibetan leader as a manipulator hungry for sympathy and
support of the international community. "The Dalai Lama
show, staged again in the United States with the usual ploy
of 'drop-by' meetings with White House politicians, is
nothing but a public relations farce, despite the bluff and
bluster of the Western media frenzy," the official China
Daily wrote Thursday.

THAT SETTING SUN (WRLD 7:46 am)
http://www.wired.com/news/news/email/member/story/16212.html
Sterling is the only currency quoted in front of today's
money standard, the dollar -- a reflection of a bygone era
when most world trade was done in pounds. But when the
single European currency begins trading on 4 January,
sterling will fall to No. 2: It'll be a question of one euro
being worth 0.70 pounds, more or less, rather than a pound
being worth 1.42 euros. "I'm sure it will be seen by some as
being the final nail in the coffin," said British economist
Richard Jeffrey. "But realistically, who cares?"

GOYA GIRLS (WRLD 7:46 am)
http://www.wired.com/news/news/email/member/story/16213.html
For centuries, the only way to get to a dozen Goya frescoes
at the Aula Dei monastary in northern Spain was to pass
through monks' living quarters. That was a major no-no, a
violation of the monks' vows. But this week Queen Sofia
inaugurated a specially built passageway, one that allows
entry to the 18th century works from the outside. Women are
in, monks are safe, everyone's happy.
