Govt bans Crikey.com.au editor

The State Government's banning of crikey.com.au journalist and editor 
Stephen Mayne from a media conference yesterday was a worrying trend for 
press freedom, a media union said.

Journalists attending a press conference where Premier Steve Bracks was due 
to announce tax reform watched as security guards refused Mr Mayne, an 
accredited journalist, entry to the building in Melbourne.

Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance assistant federal secretary, Mark 
Ryan, said the alliance was quite concerned about the actions of any 
government which sought to exclude a bona fide member of the alliance.

"It would be a worrying trend if it was left up to the government to 
determine who should and who should not cover press conferences," he said.
